There is a significant free-roaming cat problem throughout Florida, with Hillsborough County being a particularly “hot spot.” The South Shore area, notably Kings Point and Sun City Center, also has a substantial free-roaming cat population.
Reducing the numbers of free-roaming cats and treating them humanely requires a community-wide effort. Cats are domestic animals that should not be free-roaming and unmanaged. Reducing the number of free-roaming cats has many positive impacts, including reducing:
- Taxpayers’ cost
- Intake and euthanasia rates
- Health risks (rabies, round worm)
- Nuisances and complaints (odor, noise, feces, fleas)
- Wildlife predation (birds, small mammals)
- Animal stress (low life expectancy, high kitten mortality)
Over decades of experience with multiple methods around the world, the common approaches of do nothing, feeding bans, and trap and remove have proven to be ineffective. The only proven approach to date is Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR). TNR involves colony management within targeted geographic areas, spay/neuter, rabies shots, and ear-tipping (removing the left ear tip to indicate a TNR cat). Over time, with continued monitoring, the colony is substantially reduced if not eliminated.
